Abstract

Democracy is the primary foundation of national life, upholding popular sovereignty, participation, and social justice. However, the development of democracy in Indonesia still faces various challenges, ranging from low citizen political participation, social polarization, to weak digital literacy, which has the potential to threaten the quality of democracy. In this context, Civics Education (PKn) plays a strategic role in shaping the character of citizens who are critical, rational, and actively participate in public life. This article is a conceptual study that aims to explain the urgency of PKn in strengthening Indonesian democracy through a democratic, reflective, and participatory pedagogical approach. Through a literature review and analysis of educational policy, this article emphasizes that PKn plays a crucial role in developing civic knowledge, civic skills, and civic dispositions that align with the values of Pancasila and the spirit of the Independent Curriculum. Learning approaches such as Philosophy for Children (P4C), project-based learning, and strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile are considered effective in developing students' critical thinking skills and moral awareness. Furthermore, civics teachers need to act as democratic facilitators, encouraging dialogue, tolerance, and respect for differences. By strengthening democratic education in civics, Indonesia can prepare a younger generation that is not only intellectually intelligent but also possesses moral and social responsibilities in a democratic life.
